The Beauty of Trundle Beds
Additional Sleeping Space With Little Additional Cost While the concept of a daybed is easily understood, there are more decisions to make when adding the trundle unit to the mix. When you are looking at trundle beds, you will find there are two basic types so your planned use of the bed will have some bearing on your ultimate decision. The Pop-Up Trundle The most common version is the daybed pop-up trundle which actually pops up to the same height as the other bed so that the two together are the equivalent of a king-size bed. This is a very popular and convenient option and is great for adults. The pop-up unit is not attached so the two beds could remain separate as two twin beds. The Lift-Up Trundle A variation on the pop-up trundle is the lift-up bed which has legs that need to be unfolded. Since it also comes to the same height as the daybed, it can be converted into a king-size bed or can be a stand-alone twin bed. The lift-up unit is somewhat cheaper than the pop-up but it does require more work in the setup and take down the process. The Drawer Trundle The less common of the trundles for daybeds is the drawer model. It looks like a long drawer under the bed and holds the trundle unit. Available only in the wooden models (for obvious reasons), it is actually a great option for sleepovers. It's kind of like bunk beds (since they are not on the same level) but would make talking easier since there would be no need to talk to the bottom of the top bunk or hang over the edge to talk (and isn't a sleepover all about talking into the wee hours of the morning anyway!) This trundle unit stays at floor level and would be a great idea for boys as they tend to be more destructive than girls (though not always!) If you're getting a daybed for a bedroom, go ahead and get the trundle simply because that gives you additional sleeping facilities which are easily stored out of the way when not needed but can be a real lifesaver when you do need it. If you are buying a daybed more for seating than for sleeping, a trundle is probably not that important.
